Day 10: Katie Crocker
When Katie Crocker stepped into her role as CEO Designate of UNITI, she brought not only professional expertise but a deeply personal connection to the mission. For Katie, Harmony is a vision for a community where everyone belongs.
Katie’s journey began as a parent navigating the complexities of raising a child with a developmental disability. “Once I figured out how to educate Olivia, I realized education is just 13 years of her life. She’s got a lot of life to live after that. If it’s this difficult to figure out school, how on earth are we going to navigate the rest of her life?” That question led Katie to volunteer with UNITI, then join its board, and eventually become CEO.
Her perspective on “home” has evolved profoundly. “Home used to mean a place that was just mine. Olivia changed that for me. Now, home means a space where choices are respected, where you’re safe, and where community matters.” Harmony reflects that vision—private, independent living combined with shared spaces that foster connection.
Katie believes Harmony is a catalyst for belonging. "When you surround yourself with all sorts of people—old, young, families, students, disabilities, neurotypical—it allows you to see and position yourself in an entirely different way. Harmony shows the rest of the community that change can happen in a way that everybody benefits"
Her message to donors is clear: “When people donate to Harmony, the beautiful, six-storey apartment complex they help raise also makes the community more robust and resilient. The people who will live in Harmony are integral to this community. They shop locally, they work locally, they participate in the local economy. We need that.”
For Katie, Harmony is about building a future where belonging isn’t optional, it’s expected. “This is a gift,” she says. “Every day I’m reminded that when we shoulder each other up, we shoulder the whole community up. Harmony is that opportunity.”
